I came across Twitter very recently and decided to love it - which is another story. Then, I started adding people interested in the book publishing industry - one day I will tell you why. Soon, I became aware of a blog entitled The Achilles Effect, where author Cristal Smith 'debates the impact of gender stereotypes on boys, especially the effect on their understanding of masculinity'.
She uses Word Clouds (available at wordle.net) to show how gender stereotypes are reinforced by toy TV commercials in Canada. See Smith's wordles below. For her methodology and explanation see:

I strongly recommend it!

Boys' Toys:
And even less surprising... Girls' Toys
My question now is... Does this seem to be the case in our country?
Because we pretty much buy US toys, I guess we buy their stereotypes too, right? But if toy manufactors in Colombia would actually research more they would probably come up with.... the same?
What do you think?
Thanks for your comments!
women in Colombia should be treated for their needs, abilities and feelings, otherwise you will be out of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Ideas, norms and stereotypes of gender vary from culture to culture and society. The most men and women handle the ideas for use in their own benefit. Stereotypes can be a risk because they limit the potential for maximum development of their capacities.
ReplyDeleteI think we are a reflection of our childhood, I enjoyed as a child listening and reading fairy tales, and I think that sparked my love of literature and especially writing.
ReplyDeleteFor me Stereotypes are not good in any way since society started to define actions and duty just watching the gender in this case for example, creativity, personal thoughts and freedom began to be in danger. We have to pay attention not in what it seems to be but in what it really is.
ReplyDeleteif we put some stereotypes in the new industry of toys, and that kind of stuff, we will create a new way, as how the people and the kids see what they are using..... what i try to mean is that if we put a stereotype or something related to the violence they will start thinking on it.....
ReplyDeletebut if they put something different as a normal topic there would be a different thing in the future....
I think an stereotype depends of the culture, maybe the stereotype in our country is different in China or India.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe in stereotypes.
I just like being like i'm, We can't let that an stereotype define what we are or what we do, everybody have his own personality, the stereotype between women and man it's just that, an stereotype, it's my choice follow this or not, if i want to drive a cap i just do it even if i'm a women, it doesn't depend of my gender.

i think the toys are very important key to help kids grow up and i think stereotype the toys are bad because they are laerning to the kids be violent since little but at the same time its good because the boys needs things for boys and girls things for girls to be in the right way and tht help too some fathers that cant teach their sons how they must be ronald restrepo
ReplyDeletei think each person decided to pay or not pay the enough attention about what society says, as each one decided to do in you life, no matter what society always is going to say you what you "have" to do or if you are doing the right or the wrong things, Stereotypes are something in which you decided if it can affect you or if you prefer be yourself.

I think that every person is different and has different ways of thinking, I think what matters is what the person really is and not what appears to be

i think that this stereotypes is not for each society or culture, i think that these words can represent many things in the world but the first thing that we think when we look these is in toys for boys or girls, we can`t change that because the consumerism society made us like that.
ReplyDeleteI think that gender stereotypes arent good but stereotypes rich our world so we must know how to live with it.
ReplyDeletePeople think that if we follow the stereotypes of american culture we will be such as developed as The Unites States but thats a lie because people cant understand that we are a diferent nacion and that we are diferent than americans and sometimes the sistem develope in USA will not help us because we need diferent things.Im not in favor of stereotypes but i think that if we must follow and stereotype we must think first if it is helpful for us and if it is what we need!

well, I think these stereotypes are created by the industry but supported by the society and ourselves telling to the children what kind of toys they have to play with i mean if a girl want to play with an ATV or a truck the society will tell that she is wrong and she HAVE TO play with ponys and little princess and i think these kind of stereotypes create also the feminism and maleness.
ReplyDeletethe parents always limit his children, tell them what thing is good or bad, sometimes imposing some stereoypes, also they don´t leave us to explore the world.

I think that Those stereotypes are created by some old ideals and the corporations make them comercial like toys, cars...even the colors.
ReplyDeleteFor me what people think, what the belive, what they do, do have bases on their convictions and not on other contictions
That stereotypes are created by people anyone have to be judged because like something if girls want to be ''heroes'' they can be.People are what they feel , no what others think they are.we should let the children be what they want to be...
ReplyDeleteMy opinion is that all that all that stereotypes are created by somebody behind all that have his ideas and want people to follow them, they could be economic or social ideas.
ReplyDeleteIn my point of view in Colombia happens the opposite because always they want to show antisocial ideas most of all in the T.V.s shows that try to induce that he best way to earn money is the fast and easy one without thinking in the other people.
Now the question for me is why?
Juan José Gil Restrepo.
stereotypes are created by everyone, is a line that supposedly everyone should follow but it is your decision to take it or not. But something makes us think, as you may have as young a stereotype, we can not be "free" in the decisions we make and what we do, but as I said before is the choice of each.
ReplyDeletein our country is, also creates stereotypes that are guided primarily to wealth, to always have the power and run over people no matter what has to be done to achieve it.

I really like the words like chemestry, kitchen, shoulders, hurt, feel, love, study, prefer, skate, swim, run, dance, lettuce (for the pronunciation), green , peace, sneakers, pink, black, magic, people, city, shopping, bike; and the words that I really hate are hierarchy, live, monday, show, street, foot, taste, waste, three, bill and moree.... also I hate the words that are harder to pronunciation, because is difficult to me learn how to speak well
