Put on Your Yellow and Yell

Like many other nations in the world Colombia enjoys its soccer. We know it’s important when the TV news dedicate more than 30 minutes of their three-times-a-day broadcast to this very passionate sport.   Oh, and let’s not forget about the weekends, and the usual stadium fights that sometimes make it on national television. Any other athletes would love to get at least one of those minutes to promote their sport.

But are we loyal fans of our national team?

Last time I checked it was OK to support one’s squad. That hasn’t been the case lately though. I’ve met a lot of people who thought Colombia wasn’t going to make it through round 1 of the Copa America.
Some people argue that our coach is not bringing anything new to make us win. Some others say with disappointment that it’s probably better to not get any further since we may get our butts kicked even worse and that players like Radamel Falcao Garcia only score in Europe. We are better off without a humiliating parade of goals against.

Is this pessimism a reflection of our society? We kinda do that in our lives. Always expect the worst. Don’t get our hopes up too high. Let’s just pray speed skating makes it to the Olympics. Maybe one day.   But not tonight.

What happened to the ‘Si, si, Colombia, si, si Caribe’ thing? Did we become too used to losing? Are we a glass half empty country? Or is it that I’m blind and our national team sucks for real?

Right now all that matters is the next ninety minutes. I am a true believer in the kind of energy you put into things and how it affects the final outcome. You know, karma.  Maybe Dayro Moreno will feel my good vibes and finally score.

*extra credit if you send me an e-mail  this week with a short definition of slang and which words you think are slang.
What do you think?

  1. I think we are good fans because we go to drink guaro and cerveza and watch the games where people can see us. I think we are terrible fans because when the game is slow and Colombia is not scoring we inmediately start saying bad things and critizing.

What time is the game today?

  3. Well Soccer in Colombia is the most important sport of the country. The last Copa America that took place in Argentina was very awful and boring because in that, lost the best soccer teams such as Argentina, Brasil, Chile and Colombia.
I disagree with the bad comments about the best soccer player at the moment, Lionel Messi and the good players Neymar, Radamel Falcao Garcia, Alexis Sanchez and Gonzalo Higuain because they are so good, other thing is that their National Teams are disjointed.
Last weekend, Colombia's National Team(Sub 20) win their match against France (4-1) and everybody in Colombia hope our team can be in the final!!!

  4. Colombia has very good chances of winning the world cup unless Colombia play better form.

  5. I think that other sports are better than Soccer and need more fans like Gymnastic, Syncronized swimming, ultimate, and others.
Colombian TV news dedicate A LOT of time in soccer. It is boring.

  6. All people that live in Comlombia, hope that it wins the sub 20. that`s a big emotion for us, and a big celebration. Colombia is a big team, but needs to put more moral in the game. :)

  8. we are a copy of Argentina, Ingland football culture. We are not original football country, actually the songs in the stadium are the same as in Argentina (well the bit).I hope one day the speed skating and karate makes to the onlypics.

  9. in our country but said the sport is soccer, but it does not mean that mentions both have the same results, I think what happens is that needed by the coaches and players more interest and ownership by the country and selecting.
is not something that one puts all of the player to give happiness to the fans if interest by all members of the selection, just lack respect in the stadium by the fans which is demonstrated to be a sport to share with family and not fighting within the people who will see the same selection

Well soccer is a sport where everybody can say what they want to say, it is each person personal opinion but what people have to be careful with, is when they start to have different arguements about players and teams in really short laps of time.
The last world cup (sub 20)was a clear example about how people judge the work of coaches and players without strong fundaments. At the begining Colombia was for most everybody one of the best teams in that tournament, we beat France 4-1 and we kept the happiness in the fans; 1 week after that, Colombia had a bad night against Mexico and that was the end of our patriotism, Eduardo Lara was a losser 1 week after being a hero, the guys were no that good as we thought and the process that they were doing togheter ended because 90 regular minutes.

  11. if the couch of the soccer team on colombia and the owner of ythe team of colombia wont care too much about the money, and they leave some soccer players on their team, they would be better, cause if they sell all the good players and they only leave the bad ones in the team, it wont be any progress on it.....

what im trying to say is that if they just leave some good players on the team, and they dont sell all of them to other countries the team will progress, but they only care about money....

  12. The soccer is not the biggest sport in Colombia, even is one of the worst. Many other sports are better, Ultimate is one of those, Do you know that Colombia was the winner on the world cup last year in this sport? One of my best friend's it's on it, but the goverment doesn't spend anything on Ultimate, I think that they can have more support by them. We will be proud with a team like these. I just expect in the next cup world they can receive at least an uniform from the goverment.

  13. the problem with our team isnt the fans of it
its the team because imnot ssying they are bad soccer players no some of them are very good soccer players but they dont feel the shirt
for example in europe the soccer its a profession in argentina is a passion and here is the famous way so if this guys lose they dont care about it they just win their money and left but we can remember the 90s national team was one of the favorites to be the world cup champions two times this guys feels the shirt and play soccer to fix the happines of the country and they did really good enough

  15. i don`t like soccer a lot but i think that some of us are good fans like other are terrible fans and prefer to support another team. Every team has good and bad things but we have to look more to the possitive part and have confidence to ourseves.

  16. the soccer is the best sport in the world but the really problem with this sport here in colombia is that we don`t believe in our team really because we say that colombia is going to win the world cup but we are not sure in our minds that this will be real so believe in the colombia selection with love an patient

  17. I'd like that colombia weren't a soccer country but were a "multi-sport" country because out there are many differents and interesting sports such as ultimate, volleyball, baseball, etc, etc...
and there are no space enough for those who don't like the soccer.

  18. excellent article because there are many truths are reflected in terms of patriotism. I think every Colombian to speak well of their team, have sense of belonging by the team of your country and we must support the team that represents us.

  19. I think that this post is very interesting because is true that we all know but although we know it we won´t do anything that’s why that is very interesting, we need an excellent team that shut up us mouth and restart our patriotism in our teams but not only in football we do really need more collaboration in other sports, like B.M.X.

  20. I think that here in Colombia, the people are not a great example of patriotism, we are very regionalists and we only believe in ourselves, like a country, when something good happens, but when something bad happens we say that that´s not our fault. We must be interested in soccer but also in other sports like underwater hockey (that have an excellent team that went to a world championship in Holanda last July), B.M.X and a lot of other sports that are very interesting and not that known like soccer.

  21. In the sub-20 the people supported to our team was amazing and the amount of people in the stadium amazing¡
well colombia played well but like always they won to the more difficult teams and with the easy ones they lost.

  22. Colombia is a wonderful country in soccer, Colombians have fame of good soccer players, but some don´t have faith in the soccer team, so is dificult that the national team will win something if nobody have belief in it
